PERSONAL STATEMENT

I’m applying to this art degree because I want to further my education and also improve my understanding and skills in art, such as finding new and engaging methods of creating art and expressing my own experiences and opinions through my work. I really enjoy using different forms of art to express ideas, thoughts and emotions such as creating immersive and engaging installations or art pieces that inflict emotional responses from the audience. Joining this course would enable me to better adapt and learn valuable art skills, and to help challenge myself to take more risks and experiments while creating work.

I am currently studying Art and Design Level 3 at North Kent College, Tonbridge. I previously completed the level 2 course, In my current course, we have experimented with a range of media and mediums, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D installations and collage. I have a preference for working with collage and illustrations because I enjoy creating work that is impactful and meaningful and evokes an emotional message. I push to produce and complete work to the best of my ability. I am a reliable and hardworking student, I tend to be very social and caring to my peers. This is why I am student representative for our class, as I listen and take in to account everyone’s thoughts and feelings effectively. I took part in work experience in an art studio where I engaged in art related workshops with a variety of age groups, which has helped me be more adaptable and understanding of others opinions and concerns.

We have researched a variety of artists however the work of Louise Bourgeois stood out to me because her works are reflections of past experiences she has had, for example her work called ‘Spider’ and ‘Maman’ which speaks about Bourgeois past trauma, in a very powerful and emotionally driven way. I also enjoy working with disturbing dark themes this may be because I grew up with Tim Burton’s twisted fantasy movies and dark style. He has a very identifiable style, which I’m drawn too. Due to these influences, it has inspired my artwork, such as my installations called “uncomfortably comfy” and “Anxiety”.

I engage in other creative content outside of my current course, I enjoy glam and special effect horror makeup and cosplay which is taking a character and re-creating them through costumes, wigs and makeup. These are both art related hobbies but in a more alternative way, as it allows me to take a pre-existing design and make it my own. I can have my style show through it in a way the original artist hadn’t intended this also makes the technique unique and creative. I also have recently recognised a passion for tattoo designing at the moment, as it helps me take into consideration a variety of art styles and show off my art skill in an alternative way to traditional methods. It also helps me picture and improve my art, and where I want to take it in the future.

I am certain this is what I want to do In the future, as it enables me to express feelings, emotions and thoughts in a creative and engaging way. I really enjoy the diversity of options and routes I can take in this course, so joining this type of art degree is essential to me. I am fully prepared for the new experiences and challenges I might face, I’m ready to be punctual, enthusiastic, eager to improve and adapt. I’m fully confident that this is the degree for me.
